FSM mission trips to Panama usually last 7-8 days. A typical team arrives at the mission on either Saturday or Sunday and stays until the next Saturday. International flights into Panama City are followed by a Regional flight to David in Western Panama. After arriving in David, there is about a 90 minute bus ride to the mission center and orphanage in Caizan. Busses are provided for all in-country transportation.
Facilities can accommodate up to 30 people and include separate dormitory rooms for men and women with bunk beds, bathrooms and showers, a large kitchen facility and large common areas both inside and outside. The facility has indoor plumbing, and electric. Local cooks provide meals onsite. There is plenty of clean, filtered water for drinking. The mission is set in the most beautiful serene area you can imagine, with beautiful mountain views. You can see the sun rising over the volcano (long extinct) in the morning.
Teams usually focus on two objectives, outreach to the local poor families (and orphans once the facility is complete) and construction. Most construction is done at the mission, local school or local homes. Orphanage construction projects range from laying concrete block or pouring concrete to painting and landscape-type activities. Projects are available for all skill levels. Participation in ministry outreach (VBS or other) and the feeding program are also a vital parts of the mission opportunity and it is strongly recommended that everyone go at least one day “in the field.” Interaction with the local community is the cornerstone of our approach and there is an opportunity to visit a local church for a typical Latin service. On a case by case basis to be worked out with the team leaders in advance, more rustic opportunities can be planned (venturing out into the bush) for reaching more remote indigenous families and small villages.
Evenings usually consist of decompressing. Some teams get together and have some music, singing, worship and discussion of the day’s events.
Return at the end of the week (Friday or Saturday) can be accomplished in one day, or many times teams wish to stay in Panama City and see the canal, indigenous markets and other site seeing opportunities.
No special travel immunizations are necessary. It is recommended that team members have an up to date tetanus shot and have had Hepatitis A/B immunizations in the past. It is recommended that team members discuss the trip with their doctor or travel nurse for any additional recommendations.
Overall costs can vary depending on specific team needs but generally are approximately $1500.00 per person (includes both international and regional airfare). FSM can tailor your trip to meet your group’s needs to maximize your experience.
