Flora, Fauna, and Friends, Part 1

Primero que todo, quiero agradecer a FSM y QERC por brindarme la oportunidad de vivir esta increíble experiencia. Fue algo que realmente disfruté muchísimo, ya que me permitió salir de mi rutina, conocer personas nuevas y visitar un lugar al que nunca había ido antes. Todo esto hizo que la experiencia fuera aún más especial y significativa para mí.
Durante estos cuatro días aprendí muchísimo sobre la naturaleza. Me di cuenta de lo hermosa y perfecta que es, y de lo importante que es detenernos un momento para simplemente observarla y valorarla. Aprendí sobre diferentes tipos de animales, especialmente aves; pude conocer varias especies de pájaros carpinteros y observar otras aves muy interesantes. Hubo una en particular que me llamó mucho la atención: era de color negro y tenía sus patitas amarillas, aunque en el momento no logré recordar su nombre, pero su imagen se me quedó grabada.
Sin duda, uno de los momentos más impresionantes fue cuando vi al increíble quetzal. Nuestro guía, Raúl, nos explicó que no era común verlo comportarse de la manera en que lo hizo en ese momento, ya que estaba buscando comida porque tenía un nido cerca. Yo pensaba que el quetzal era un ave pequeña, pero me sorprendió ver que en realidad es bastante grande y posee una cola muy larga y hermosa. Además, aprendí a diferenciar entre el macho y la hembra: el macho tiene el pecho rojo y una cola mucho más larga, lo que lo hace ver más llamativo.
El paisaje también fue algo que me dejó sin palabras. Había muchísimos árboles, todos muy altos y fuertes, lo que hacía que el lugar pareciera sacado de una película. Todo se veía tan verde y tan vivo que realmente me hizo sentir en otro mundo. También aprendí algo muy interesante: los árboles, cuando mueren, aportan más nutrientes al suelo que cuando están vivos. Esto me demostró cómo la naturaleza siempre encuentra la manera de mantenerse en un equilibrio perfecto. Además, tuve la oportunidad de ver hongos que nunca había visto antes, lo cual fue algo totalmente nuevo para mí.
Otro momento muy especial fue cuando compartimos con las chicas del lugar. Fuimos al río y nos metimos aunque estaba extremadamente frío y casi no sentía mi cuerpo por el clima de San Gerardo, fue una experiencia muy divertida y significativa que recordaré con mucho cariño.
Finalmente, esta experiencia también me hizo reflexionar sobre Dios. Al observar tanta belleza, desde los animales hasta los árboles y los paisajes, no pude evitar pensar en lo maravilloso que es todo lo que Él ha creado. Cada detalle, por pequeño que sea, tiene un propósito y una belleza única. Siento que esta vivencia me ayudó a acercarme más a Dios, a valorar más Su creación y a entender que debemos cuidarla y respetarla, ya que es un regalo que nos ha sido dado. En conclusión, esta fue una experiencia inolvidable que me dejó muchos aprendizajes, recuerdos hermosos y una nueva forma de ver el mundo que me rodea.
First of all, I want to thank FSM and QERC for giving me the opportunity to have this incredible experience. It was something I truly enjoyed immensely, as it allowed me to step out of my routine, meet new people, and visit a place I had never been to before. All of this made the experience even more special and meaningful to me.
During these four days, I learned a great deal about nature. I realized just how beautiful and perfect it is, and how important it is to pause for a moment simply to observe and appreciate it. I learned about different types of animals, especially birds; I was able to identify several species of woodpeckers and observe other very interesting birds. There was one in particular that really caught my eye: it was black with little yellow feet—although I can’t recall its name, its image remains etched in my memory.
Undoubtedly, one of the most impressive moments was when I saw the incredible quetzal. Our guide, Raúl, explained to us that it was unusual to see one behaving the way this one did at that moment, as it was foraging for food because it had a nest nearby. I had always thought the quetzal was a small bird, but I was surprised to see that it is actually quite large and possesses a very long, beautiful tail. Furthermore, I learned how to distinguish between the male and the female: the male has a red breast and a much longer tail, which gives it a more striking appearance.
The landscape was another thing that left me speechless! There were countless trees—all very tall and sturdy—making the place look as if it had been plucked straight out of a movie. Everything looked so green and so alive that it truly made me feel as though I were in another world. I also learned something very interesting: when trees die, they contribute more nutrients to the soil than they do when they are alive. This demonstrated to me how nature always finds a way to maintain a perfect balance. Additionally, I had the opportunity to see mushrooms I had never encountered before—something entirely new to me.
Another very special moment was when we spent time with the local girls. We went down to the river and waded in—even though it was extremely cold, and I could barely feel my body due to the climate in San Gerardo—and it turned out to be a very fun and meaningful experience that I will remember with great fondness.
Finally, this experience also led me to reflect on God. As I observed such immense beauty—from the animals to the trees and the landscapes—I could not help but marvel at how wonderful everything He has created truly is. Every detail, no matter how small, possesses a unique purpose and beauty. I feel that this experience helped me draw closer to God, to value His creation more deeply, and to understand that we must care for and respect it, as it is a gift that has been bestowed upon us.
This was an unforgettable experience that left me with many lessons learned, beautiful memories, and a new way of looking at the world around me.

La gira a San Gerardo de Dota fue una de las experiencias más bonitas que he tenido. Más allá del paisaje increíble lo que hizo este viaje realmente especial fue la oportunidad de convivir con los estudiantes de Estados Unidos. Me impactó mucho saber que cada persona tiene su propia meta, sus propios sueños y sus gustos particulares; entender eso fue algo muy especial para mí.
Me encantó conocer un poquito de la historia de cada uno de ellos. A pesar de que venimos de lugares diferentes y hablamos idiomas distintos, fue muy bonito compartir con todos y darnos cuenta de las cosas que nos unen. Tuvimos la oportunidad de hablar de muchísimos temas: desde nuestras creencias y lo que Dios significa en nuestras vidas, hasta hacer cosas más divertidas como bailar y bromear. Esas conversaciones me ayudaron no solo a conocerlos a ellos, sino también a aprender más sobre mí mismo y sobre cómo Dios actúa en diferentes personas, sin importar de dónde vengan.
Salir de mi rutina para pasar tiempo con gente nueva, tan amable y abierta, fue demasiado bonito, ya fuera caminando por los senderos con cuidado de no resbalar o durante las comidas. Me sentí muy cómodo compartiendo mis experiencias y escuchando las de ellos, me hizo sentir muy bien.
Quiero dar las gracias a todos los que hicieron esto posible. Me voy con nuevos amigos y buenos recuerdos.
The trip to San Gerardo de Dota was one of the most beautiful experiences I have ever had. Beyond the incredible scenery, what made this journey truly special was the opportunity to spend time with the students from the United States. It struck me deeply to realize that every person has their own goals, their own dreams, and their own unique tastes; understanding that was something very special to me.
I loved getting to know a little bit of each of their stories. Even though we come from different places and speak different languages, it was wonderful to share time with everyone and discover the things that unite us. We had the opportunity to talk about a wide range of topics—from our beliefs and what God means in our lives, to doing more lighthearted things like dancing and joking around. Those conversations helped me not only to get to know them but also to learn more about myself and how God works in different people, regardless of where they come from.
Stepping out of my daily routine to spend time with new people—people who were so kind and open—was truly wonderful, whether we were walking along the trails (careful not to slip!) or sharing meals together. I felt very comfortable sharing my own experiences and listening to theirs; it left me feeling truly uplifted.
I want to thank everyone who made this possible. I leave with new friends and cherished memories.

Por medio de este texto, quiero empezar agradeciendo de todo corazón a FSM por la oportunidad que me dieron de ir a compartir y disfrutar de este paseo a San Gerardo de Dota, que estuvo demasiado lindo. Fue una experiencia donde pude aprender muchísimo sobre las aves y los bosques, cosas que uno a veces tiene cerca pero no se detiene a estudiar de verdad.
Quiero dar un agradecimiento al grupo de estudiantes de QERC. Ellos nos recibieron con mucha amabilidad y nos permitieron convivir y compartir de cerca con ellos en su propio espacio. Fue muy interesante aprender sobre lo que ellos estudian, ver cómo se emocionan por la naturaleza y por los datos que recolectan me hizo valorar mucho más el trabajo que hacen por nuestro medio ambiente.
Para mí, la parte más divertida de todo el viaje fue convivir y jugar con ellos. A pesar de la barrera del idioma a veces, el juego y las risas nos ayudaron a conectarnos de una forma increíble. Los juegos fueron momentos de mucha alegría que hicieron que el viaje fuera mucho más que una simple gira de estudio.
Fue una experiencia maravillosa poder aprender, conversar sobre la vida en Estados Unidos y en Costa Rica, y pasar tiempo juntos. Además de las caminatas y los momentos de observar quetzales, me llevo recuerdos muy buenos de cada persona que conocí ahí.
I would like to begin by expressing my heartfelt gratitude to FSM for the opportunity they gave me to join and enjoy this trip to San Gerardo de Dota—a trip that was truly beautiful. It was an experience where I was able to learn a great deal about birds and forests—things that are sometimes right under our noses, yet we rarely take the time to truly study them.
I would also like to extend my thanks to the group of students from QERC. They welcomed us with great kindness and allowed us to interact and share time closely with them in their own space. It was fascinating to learn about their fields of study; seeing their passion for nature and for the data they collect made me appreciate the work they do for our environment all the more.
For me, the most enjoyable part of the entire trip was simply spending time and playing with them. Despite the occasional language barrier, our games and laughter helped us connect in an incredible way. Those games were moments filled with joy that made the trip much more than just a standard field trip.
It was a wonderful experience to be able to learn, converse about life in both the United States and Costa Rica, and simply spend time together. Beyond the hikes and the moments spent observing quetzals, I take away very fond memories of every person I met there.
