...the light of the world.

Matthew 5:14 says, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.”
What does it mean to be the light of the world? Jesus doesn't say, "Try to be light," but rather, "You are the light of the world." If we follow Christ, our lives must reflect who He is. Light represents truth, love, hope, goodness, and justice. Being light begins with simple actions: treating people well, telling the truth, helping others, forgiving, respecting others, praying for others, and living in a way that honors God. It is showing God's love through our actions.
A small light can illuminate a much larger dark room. In the same way, God wants to use our lives to bring hope to those who live with sadness, fear, or despair. A gesture of love or a word of encouragement can make a big difference!
These small gestures are noticeable, like how cities built on hills are visible from afar. When Scripture says our faith should be evident in the way we live, this is what it means: so that others may see Christ in our actions, especially when we face difficulties.
Light is not meant to be hidden; it’s meant to expose darkness and pain, and bring freedom. God gave us gifts and opportunities to bless others. We should not hide our faith out of fear or shame, but rather allow others to see the change God has made in us.
And we must remember that this light comes from Jesus. We do not produce that light by our own strength. Jesus said, "I am the light of the world" before he declared “You are the light of the world.” We reflect His light. The closer we live to Him through prayer, Bible reading, and obedience, the more we reflect His love.
This is an identity and a mission: to be light in a world that often lives in darkness. May our actions reflect His love and lead others to glorify God.

Heavenly Father, thank you that in Jesus we find the true light of the world. Help us not to hide this light: that we may forgive where there is resentment, encourage where there is sadness, and share truth where there is confusion. Draw us closer to you each day so that our lives may reflect your love without fear or shame, and that others, seeing us, may come to know you.

Mateo 5:14, “Ustedes son la luz del mundo. Una ciudad situada sobre un monte no se puede esconder.”
¿Qué significa ser la luz del mundo? Jesús no dice: "Traten de ser luz", sino "Ustedes son la luz del mundo". Si seguimos a Cristo, nuestra vida debe reflejar quién es Él. La luz representa la verdad, el amor, la esperanza, la bondad y la justicia. Ser luz comienza con acciones sencillas: tratar bien a las personas, decir la verdad, ayudar, perdonar, respetar y vivir de una manera que honre a Dios.
La oscuridad necesita luz. Una luz pequeña puede iluminar una habitación oscura. De la misma manera, Dios quiere usar nuestra vida para llevar esperanza a quienes viven con tristeza, miedo o desesperanza. Un gesto de amor o una palabra de ánimo pueden marcar una gran diferencia.
Una ciudad sobre un monte no puede esconderse. Las ciudades construidas sobre un monte eran visibles desde muy lejos. Jesús nos enseña que nuestra fe debe notarse por la forma en que vivimos. No para llamar la atención, sino para que otros vean a Cristo en nuestras acciones, especialmente cuando enfrentamos dificultades.
La luz no es para esconderla. Jesús también enseña que nadie enciende una lámpara para esconderla. Dios nos dio dones y oportunidades para bendecir a los demás. No debemos ocultar nuestra fe por miedo o vergüenza, sino permitir que otros vean el cambio que Dios ha hecho en nosotros.
La luz viene de Jesús. Nosotros no producimos esa luz por nuestras propias fuerzas. Jesús dijo: "Yo soy la luz del mundo." Nosotros reflejamos Su luz. Mientras más cerca vivimos de Él mediante la oración, la lectura de la Biblia y la obediencia, más reflejamos Su amor.
¿Cómo podemos ser luz cada día? Podemos ser luz hablando con respeto, siendo honestos, ayudando a quien lo necesite, perdonando, orando por otros y mostrando el amor de Dios con nuestras acciones.
Mateo 5:14 nos recuerda que Jesús nos dio una identidad y una misión: ser luz en un mundo que muchas veces vive en oscuridad. No porque seamos mejores que los demás, sino porque Cristo vive en nosotros. Que nuestras acciones reflejen Su amor y lleven a otros a glorificar a Dios.

Padre celestial, gracias porque en Jesús encontramos la verdadera luz del mundo. Te pido que nos ayudes a no esconder lo que tú has puesto en nosotros: perdón donde haya rencor, ánimo donde haya tristeza, verdad donde haya confusión. Acércanos más a ti cada día para que nuestra vida refleje tu amor sin miedo ni vergüenza, y que otros, al vernos, te glorifiquen a ti.
