Flora, Fauna, and Friends, Part 2

Hola soy Selene y quiero contarles sobre nuestra última semana. Tuvimos la gran oportunidad de ir de gira a San Gerardo de Dota, un lugar verdaderamente maravilloso. Ha sido una de las mejores experiencias que he vivido a nivel personal, ya que pude apreciar cómo un pueblo tan pequeño y escondido en las montañas puede estar tan lleno de belleza, vida y maravillas naturales.
Siempre llevaré en mi corazón la experiencia de haber visitado ese lugar. Fue increíble observar el bosque: desde árboles pequeños cubiertos de musgo hasta árboles enormes que parecen tocar el cielo. Me encantó ver las flores con colores hermosos y únicos, con pequeños insectos en ellas, y admirar el vuelo de las mariposas, tanto las de día como las de noche. Fue especialmente mágico observar y aprender cómo de un simple gusano nace una criatura tan bella. También fue muy especial ver tantos pajaritos diferentes; aprender sobre sus comportamientos me hizo comprender que cada una de esas pequeñas vidas fue diseñada con amor por Dios.
Al caminar por los senderos, no podía dejar de pensar en que Dios dedicó un tiempo especial para crear toda esa hermosura. Ver árboles bellísimos, insectos diminutos, pájaros con plumajes de colores únicos y hojas con tantas formas y tonalidades, me hizo admirar Su poder. Cada rincón de San Gerardo me recordaba lo detallista que es el Creador con nosotros.
Sin duda, lo más emocionante del viaje fue el encuentro con el quetzal. Mientras regresábamos hacia el centro de investigación donde nos quedábamos, comentábamos algo muy lindo que nos dijo el guía: que era muy inusual ver al quetzal durante tanto tiempo en un mismo lugar y tan cerca. Lo que más me conmovió fue saber que algunos de nosotros habíamos pasado la mañana orando, pidiéndole a Dios que nos permitiera verlo aunque fuera por un minuto. Lo más hermoso fue darnos cuenta de que Dios no solo escuchó nuestra oración, sino que nos consintió permitiéndonos admirarlo por unos diez minutos o más. Poder ver de cerca sus colores brillantes, su tamaño y su manera elegante de volar fue un regalo directo del cielo.
En ese momento le agradecí profundamente a Dios por permitirnos contemplar esa maravilla. Miraba a mi alrededor y podía sentir Su presencia en cada rincón, en el paisaje y en la paz que se respiraba. Escuchar sobre la naturaleza y caminar físicamente en medio de ella fue una experiencia que no se puede olvidar. Otra de las cosas que le agradezco a Dios fue el espectacular atardecer que nos regaló una de las tardes, con tonos rosados y morados pintando las montañas.
Para finalizar, este viaje no solo me permitió conocer un lugar nuevo de mi país, sino también fortalecer mi fe, valorar aún más el medio ambiente y comprender que en cada detalle de la creación podemos ver el amor y la grandeza de Dios. Es una experiencia que siempre recordaré con mucha alegría y gratitud.
We had the wonderful opportunity to go on a field trip to San Gerardo de Dota—a truly marvelous place. It has been one of the best personal experiences of my life, as I was able to truly appreciate how such a small village, tucked away in the mountains, can be so full of beauty, life, and natural wonders.
I will always carry the memory of visiting that place in my heart. It was incredible to observe the forest—from small, moss-covered trees to massive trees that seemed to touch the sky. I loved seeing flowers with beautiful, unique colors—often with tiny insects resting upon them—and admiring the flight of the butterflies, both the day-fliers and the nocturnal ones. It felt especially magical to observe and learn how such a beautiful creature emerges from a simple caterpillar. It was also very special to see so many different little birds; learning about their behaviors helped me realize that each one of these tiny lives was designed with love by God.
As I walked along the trails, I couldn't help but think about how God must have devoted special time to creating all this beauty. Seeing magnificent trees, tiny insects, birds with uniquely colored plumage, and leaves in such a variety of shapes and shades filled me with awe at his power. Every corner of San Gerardo reminded me just how attentive to detail the Creator is when it comes to us.
Without a doubt, the most thrilling part of the trip was our encounter with the quetzal. As we were heading back to the research center where we were staying, we were discussing something lovely our guide had told us: that it is highly unusual to see a quetzal stay in one spot—and at such close range—for such a long time. What moved me most was knowing that some of us had spent the morning in prayer, asking God to grant us the chance to see one, even if only for a single minute. The most beautiful realization was that God not only heard our prayer but also truly indulged us, allowing us to admire the bird for ten minutes or more. Being able to see its brilliant colors, its size, and its elegant flight up close felt like a gift sent directly from heaven. At that moment, I thanked God deeply for allowing us to behold such a marvel. I looked around and could feel His presence in every corner—in the landscape and in the palpable sense of peace that filled the air. Hearing about nature and then physically walking amidst it was an unforgettable experience. Another thing I am grateful to God for was the spectacular sunset He gifted us one evening, with shades of pink and purple painting the mountains.
This journey not only allowed me to discover a new part of my country but also to strengthen my faith, appreciate the environment even more, and realize that in every detail of creation, we can see the love and greatness of God. It is an experience I will always remember with great joy and gratitude.

En mi experiencia personal, el viaje a San Gerardo de Dota fue algo muy bonito que guardaré con mucho aprecio. Me gustó muchísimo el hecho de poder salir de la zona de confort para compartir con personas de otros lugares, pero lo que realmente me marcó fue la manera en la que pude sentir a Dios a través de la naturaleza y de todo lo que nos rodeaba.
Durante los días que estuvimos ahí hubo una manera muy específica en la que sentí una conexión muy bonita con Dios, fue la noche de la fogata. Estábamos todos reunidos, compartiendo y cantando juntos bajo las estrellas. Para algunos podría parecer un momento simple, pero para mí significó mucho, ya que anteriormente no había logrado sentir la presencia de Dios de ese modo tan real y cercano.
También disfruté mucho los momentos en el jardín haciendo el devocional. Estar ahí sentados, rodeados de tantas plantas y respirando paz, ayudó a que la experiencia fuera aún más profunda. Todo lo que pasó en esos días, desde las caminatas donde nos cansábamos pero disfrutábamos el paisaje, hasta los momentos de oración, fue una experiencia muy bonita que me ayudó a ver el mundo de una forma diferente.
Sin duda fue una experiencia que me hizo crecer mucho.
In my personal experience, the trip to San Gerardo de Dota was a truly beautiful event that I will cherish deeply. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to step outside my comfort zone and connect with people from other places; however, what truly left a lasting impression on me was the way I was able to sense God through nature and everything that surrounded us.
During our stay there, there was one specific moment when I felt a particularly beautiful connection with God: the night of the bonfire. We were all gathered together—sharing stories and singing in unison beneath the stars. To some, it might have seemed like a simple moment, but to me, it meant a great deal, as I had never before managed to feel God's presence in such a real and intimate way.
I also greatly enjoyed the moments spent in the garden during our devotional sessions. Sitting there, surrounded by such abundant greenery and breathing in an atmosphere of peace, helped make the entire experience even more profound. Everything that took place during those days—from the hikes where we grew weary yet reveled in the scenery, to the quiet moments of prayer—was a beautiful experience that helped me view the world through a different lens.
Without a doubt, it was an experience that fostered significant personal growth.

Mi experiencia en San Gerardo de Dota fue increíble, porque sentí que pude vivir algo totalmente diferente a mi rutina de siempre. Al estar ahí, rodeada de tantas montañas y naturaleza, pude desconectarme por fin del celular y de todo el ruido. Eso me sirvió muchísimo para estar tranquila y pensar mejor en mi vida y en mi relación con Dios.
Durante el campamento tuvimos momentos muy bonitos. Cuando nos tocaba orar, cantar o escuchar las enseñanzas, sentí que mi fe se hacía más fuerte y que Dios de verdad estaba ahí con nosotros. También disfruté mucho compartir con gente nueva; me divertí bastante y aprendí cosas de los demás que no sabía. Aunque fueron pocos días, fueron suficientes para ver la belleza de Dios en todo lo que Él creó.
Para mí, este viaje fue más que una simple salida. Me ayudó a conocerme mejor a mí misma y a descubrir cosas nuevas, pero lo más importante fue aprender más sobre nuestro Creador. Me quedo con una sensación de mucha paz y con ganas de seguir viendo la mano de Dios en cada detalle.
My experience in San Gerardo de Dota was incredible, as I felt I was able to experience something completely different from my usual routine. While there—surrounded by so many mountains and nature—I was finally able to disconnect from my phone and from all the noise. This proved immensely beneficial, allowing me to find inner peace and reflect more deeply on my life and my relationship with God.
During the retreat, we shared some truly beautiful moments. Whenever it was time to pray, sing, or listen to the teachings, I felt my faith growing stronger and sensed that God was truly present among us. I also thoroughly enjoyed connecting with new people; I had a lot of fun and learned things about others that I hadn't known before. Although it was only a few days, that time was sufficient to witness the beauty of God in everything he created.
For me, this trip was more than just a simple getaway. It helped me get to know myself better and discover new things, but most importantly, it allowed me to learn more about our Creator. I am left with a profound sense of peace and a desire to continue seeing the hand of God in every detail.

Durante esta experiencia no solo gozamos de lo que nos podía ofrecer la naturaleza, o de los espacios de recreación que compartimos con los estudiantes de QERC; sino que también fue una experiencia en la que se nos permitió vivir desde el ámbito espiritual.
Con los estudiantes y algunos profesores no solo aprendimos sobre la naturaleza y biodiversidad del bosque, sino que todo fue enfocado en Dios. Con Hannah hicimos una actividad llamada Terra Divina, en la que nos enfocamos en poner atención a aquellos pequeños detalles dentro de la naturaleza que nos conectan con Dios. Esta gira también fue un espacio de meditación donde pudimos sentir más allá de lo que pudimos ver.
Aprendimos que aún en las cosas en las que estamos acostumbradas a ver como paisajes, atardeceres etc; son a través de las cuales Dios nos puede hablar por medio de su creación divina.
During this experience, we not only enjoyed what nature had to offer us—as well as the recreational spaces we shared with the students from QERC—but it was also an experience that allowed us to engage on a spiritual level.
Together with the students and some of the professors, we learned not only about the nature and biodiversity of the forest, but everything was also centered on God. With Hannah, we participated in an activity called Terra Divina, in which we focused on paying attention to those small details within nature that connect us with God. This excursion also served as a space for meditation, where we were able to perceive beyond what was visible to the eye.
We learned that even in the things we are accustomed to viewing merely as landscapes, sunsets, and the like, God can speak to us through His divine creation.
